Utica College Wins, Earns First Round Hosting Rights for ECAC West Tournament
Utica, NY (2/23/14) – The Utica College women’s hockey team defeated visiting SUNY Potsdam, 6-4, in the final game of the regular season Sunday afternoon at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. With the win, the Pioneers jump ahead of Potsdam in the ECAC West Conference standings and earned hosting rights for the first round of the conference tournament. Utica will host Potsdam next Sunday at the Utica Auditorium in the first round of the playoffs with time to be announced.Freshman Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire) netted her first career hat trick, and three other players scored to help Utica improve to 16-8-1 (9-6-1 ECAC West) on the year. The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first period behind a pair of goals from Schnepp and one goal each from seniors Vanessa Maines (Boxborough, MA/Boston Jr. Shamrocks) and Megan Myers (Las Vegas, NV/LA Selects).

Schnepp added her third tally of the day on a short handed breakaway in the second period for her 15th goal of the season. Freshman Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) capped off the scoring for UC at 17:23 as she netted her fifth of the year, assisted by Maines and Myers.

Potsdam was able to add a goal in the third period, but it was not enough as the Pioneers held on for the victory. Kelsey Dowdall (Smiths Falls, ONT/Nepean) had three assists on the afternoon, while Janessa Haasbeek (Grand Forks, ND/Canadian International Hockey Academy) added two helpers and Caitlyn Moccaldi (Clinton, NY/Clinton High School Boys) and Samantha Pucci (Pearl River, NY/Connecticut Polar Bears) each had one assist. Senior Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca, NY/Northwood School) made 28 saves in the win.

Alexane Rodriguez had 13 saves before being replaced by Abby Tardelli, who made 28 stops in 40 minutes of work. Potsdam falls to 12-9-4 (7-5-4) overall. Utica finishes the regular season in fourth place in the conference.
