Three Colorado Thunderbirds Alumni  Selected in 2014 NHL Draft

The Colorado Thunderbirds are pleased to announce that three former Colorado Thunderbirds players, Dominic Turgeon, Fredrik Olofsson, and Hayden Hawkey, were drafted on Saturday, June 28, in the 2014 NHL Draft bringing the total Thunderbirds players drafted in the NHL to 10 since 2008!  Players from the Colorado Thunderbirds program continue to have excellent opportunities and to benefit from the foundational training received in the organization.

Dominic Turgeon, a center, was drafted by Detroit Redwings in the 3rd round, 63rd overall.  He played last season for the WHL Portland Winterhawks.  Dominic, son of Pierre & Elisabeth, comes from a great hockey family on and off the ice.  He has lived in the Denver area since he was 9 and his father was playing for the Colorado Avalanche.  Turgeon played for the Colorado Thunderbirds between 2008-2012 before suiting up for the Winterhawks the past two seasons.

Fredrik Olofsson, a forward, was selected by Chicago Blackhawks in the 4th Round, 98th overall.  Olofsson resides in Broomfield, CO, and played for the Colorado Thunderbirds from 2009-2013.  During the 2013-2014 season, Olofsson played for the USHL Chicago Steel and Green Bay Gamblers.  He is presently undecided where he will play college hockey but has many options open to him.  His brother, Gustav, was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the 2013 NHL Draft and signed with them this past spring.

Hayden Hawkey, a goalie, was chosen by the Montreal Canadiens in the 6th round, 177th overall.  Hawkey is from Parker, CO, and played for USHL Omaha Lancers last season where he was named goaltender of the year by the USHL, All-USHL First Team, and became the first goaltender in the USHL Tier 1 era (2002-present) to finish the season with a sub-2.00 GAA.  Hawkey protected the pipes for the Thunderbirds from 2009-2013.  He is committed to play at Providence College following his USHL career.

Other former Colorado Thunderbirds that have been drafted in the NHL are:
  • Seth Jones, a defenseman, drafted by Nashville Predators in the 1st Round, 4th overall in 2013
  • Gustav Olofsson, a defenseman, drafted by Minnesota Wild in the 2nd Round, 46th overall in 2013
  • Quentin Shore, a center, drafted in the 6th Round, 168th overall by Ottawa Senators in 2013
  • Jaccob Slavin, a defenseman, drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 4th round, 120th overall in 2012
  • Nick Shore, a forward, drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 3rd round, 82nd overall in 2011
  • Josiah Didier, a defenseman, drafted by the Montreal Canadians in the 4th round, 97th overall in 2011
  • Sean Lorenz, a defenseman, drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the 4th round, 115th overall in 2008

The Colorado Thunderbirds are proud of Dominic, Fredrik, and Hayden.  We congratulate these fine young men and their families, and wish them the best of luck.

Star skaters Micah Sanford, Chris Francis and Nick Robone of Las Vegas will be skating at the NARCh Nationals next month. The three were signed today by the Arizona Outcasts who are qualified and in the field of NARCh Pro teams in Estero, Florida.

“We were bummed we couldn’t play with our regular Las Vegas team but this will still be fun,” Nick Robone said today.

The NARCh Nationals are the World Series of roller. The Las Vegas Tour Rebels NARCh pro team qualified, but withdrew after announcing they were without a pro level goalie.

A top goalie is not available, so the medal-winning Las Vegas Tour Rebels roller team will not be sending its NARCh Pro team to the NARCh Nationals next month in Estero, Fla.

The Rebels also decided not to play in the upcoming AAU Junior Olympics which will be held July 10-20 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“Pretty unfortunate, but Micah (Sanford) just informed me we will not have a pro team going out because we were unable to find a pro goalie,” said Nick Robone, a 4-time Vegas Hockey Roller Player of the Year.

Mike Urbano was the goalie for Las Vegas at a NARCh Quaifier in Huntington Beach. Las Vegas beat Outcast Arizona in the gold medal game. Urbano, from Southern California, was named ‘Best Goalie’ of the tournament but he is not available to go to the NARCh Nationals.

Some of the Rebels skaters, Robone said, will try to hook on with other teams who are qualified and going to the Nationals.

Here are the NARCh Pro teams entered:

Alkali Assault, Alkali RPD, Alkali Surge, Arizona Outcasts, Black Ice, Bordercats, Detroit Infamous, Florida Dirtybirds, ISCA Grizzlies, Labeda Snipers, Next Gen, LA Pama Cyclones, Tour Excitement, Tour LTD, Tour Mudcats, Tour Roadrunners, Vanquish.

Roy Henderson and his Las Vegas Global Showcase at the Las Vegas Ice Center this week is the best there is and there’s been quite a few Showcases here in town. For years Roy has helped Las Vegas players advance to the junior and college level of the game. Roy knows the game, knows talent when he sees it, and says “there’s a team somewhere for every player we have here at Global.”  He was one of the first to say Jason Zucker of Las Vegas would play in the NHL and two years ago said Vito Carlo of Las Vegas is the real deal. Roy is one of the owners of the BCHL Langley Rivermen as well.

Jimmy Samuels, 16, of Las Vegas was playing the NHL 2014 game on his XBox when he found a WHL app on the game. He went to it, scrolled through the rosters and discovered Beau McCue who plays for the WHL Tri-City Americans. “Skated with Beau when he was here in town with the Nevada Storm bantams,” Jimmy said. “Now he’s on my fantasy hockey team.”

Most folks at Crystal Palace know Chris Raveling as a referee in the men’s league roller games. What they don’t know is that when Chris skates on the big rink it’s a miracle. When he was in third grade, he was on a bicycle going to school. He forgot his homework.  When he rode his bike home, he went through a school crosswalk, was struck by a car and had a fractured skull, punctured lungs, induced coma. Somehow, someway he recovered and, got back on his skates.  Four years ago Chris skated in the NARCh Nationals Championships with the Adam Tamura-coached Sin City Snipers.

And what was Chris thinking when he hit the floor that very first game at the Nationals?

“Heaven,” he telling the folks at the rinkboards last night.

When Gabe Gauthier got the job as the head coach of the WSHL Las Vegas Storm the first thing he learned is that he was starting from scratch – not a single player on his roster.

“Does the WSHL give you a few players,” we asked.

“No, we’re a new club and we have to get every player ourselves,” he said.

Eddie Samuels’ nephew is five-year-old Ryan Zurfluh. He wants to play roller hockey. So last night he brought his own net with four sticks – two of them plastic – at the Crystal Palace roller rink on North Rancho Drive. He pulled on his green skates and in a few moments, a big game was on over by the vending machines by the North wall. His hockey mom MC was a big soccer star in high school so maybe that’s the connection.  At home, Ryan’s sister Leah, age 2 1/2, is the goalie

Micah Sanford Reunited With Former Chilliwack Chiefs Teammate Gabe Gauthier, Will Coach AA Las Vegas Storm Bantams

Las Vegas – Micah Sanford, the scoreking in ice and roller in Las Vegas, is back on the bench. He will be reunited with former BCHL Chilliwack Chief teammate Gabe Gauthier who is the new hockey director at the Las Vegas Ice Center and the head coach of the new WSHL Las Vegas Storm junior club.

“Gabe called me back in April and I decided to coach again,” Micah said on Friday.

Micah will be the head coach of AA Las Vegas Storm bantam 14u ice team. It will be the first time he has coached at the Ice Center in four seasons, the last being when he was head coach of an AAA Nevada Storm 16u team and was a top assistant for an AAA Nevada Storm 18u team. Pokey Reddick was the head coach of the 18s that season.

Micah and Gabe Gauthier skated together in 2001-02 on an awesome BCHL Chilliwack Chiefs team which went 47-10-4 in the regular season, then won the Doyle Cup and qualified and competed in the Royal Bank Cup.

Micah had 47 goals, 58 assists in the regular season, set a BCHL record in the playoffs with 21 goals, 11 assists – breaking a record held by Brett Hull – then had 4 goals, 3 assists in Doyle Cup action and another 4 goals, 8 assists in the RBC – the Royal Bank Cup Championships.

Totalled, Micah had 76 goals, 80 assists for the Chilliwack Chiefs that season. Or, as head coach Harvey Smyl said, “He was a man among boys in the biggest of games.”

When Gauthier was hired and came into Las Vegas earlier this year, he hooked up with Micah.

“Gabe and I were teammates but we never really played on the same line at Chilliwack,” Micah said. “Rather, we played on power plays and penalty kills together.”

Micah and his older brother David run the Crystal Palace roller rink on North Rancho Drive. Micah’s father Larry has retired although he usually will get back onto the bench when the Las Vegas Tour Rebels NARCh Pro team competes in the summertime NARCh Nationals.

As an ice coach this autumn, Micah will be assisted by Evan Zucker who is one of the all-time goal scoring leaders in Las Vegas hockey in ice and roller, like Micah.

“Yes, Evan will helping me at practices and will be running the bench during tournaments this year,” Micah said.
