Las Vegas – Hockey coach Rob Pallin of Las Vegas got the call at 7 am this morning. “They (the owners) sounded just as excited as I was when they told me the news.”

Coach Rob, an assistant coach last winter, was promoted today to head coach of Sapa Fehervar A19 in Hungary.

So who did coach Rob called first?

That was his dad David and mother Char who live in Chisholm, Minnesota.

“Mom, Dad..I got the job,” he told them.

Then he held the phone back a bit as they both screamed excitedly…..

=========

Rob Pallin, who years ago put Las Vegas youth hockey on the map – coaching the first nationally-ranked Las Vegas midget team which went to the U.S. Nationals, coaching the UNLV Rebels hockey club to first-ever Top 10 spots in the Western ratings, who was on the bench when the ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers played for the Kelly Cup — got the job he always wanted: to be a head coach of a pro hockey club.

He replaces friend Marty Raymond who resigned about two weeks ago to take a coaching position in Italy.

“We have a very young hockey team and they (the Sapa owners) liked how I developed the younger players,” Rob said today.

He paused….

“I am very humbled to be named the head coach. Our team finished 10th in the regular sason last year. I love the challenge of taking over struggling programs and making them elite teams. We did in the past with the Las Vegas Mustangs and Rebels midget teams and the UNLV hockey program.

He plans to bring in US players like Brandon Marino of Bemidji State; Andrew Sarauer of Northern Michigan, Frank Banham who has played in 32 NHL and 304 AHL games. Matt Register, a top scorer from the Ontario Reign is going there as well as Jeff LoVecchio of Western Michigan.

Coach Rob departs Las Vegas on Tuesday, July 29 – connecting from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City, Paris and into Budapest.

CHRIS FRANCIS, GOAL SCORER, LAS VEGAS

“I AM ON THE ICE TRAINING A FEW TIMES A WEEK HERE AND I SEE A DIFFERENT PICTURE OF HOCKEY IN LAS VEGAS. A LOT OF THE YOUNGER KIDS IN TOWN ARE WEARING L.A. KINGS JERSEYS, VERY PROUD OF THE NEW CHAMPIONS.

“THERE IS A GREAT BASE OF MITES, SQUIRTS AND BANTAM ICE PLAYERS AT THE RINKS IN TOWN. WE ARE JUST A YEAR OR TWO AWAY FROM GETTING SOME OF THESE PLAYERS MOVING UP AND PLAYING MIDGET LEVEL HOCKEY. IT’S GOING TO TAKE TIME BUT IT’S A CYCLE WE ARE GOING THROUGH AND IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN.”

A huge “thank you” to the Sanford and Crystal Palace family for serving the youth and adult hockey (and Las Vegas) community as well as they have over the years. It has been a wonderful environment, filled with so many good memories! Larry and family have shared, and shown, their love of this sport for a long time. Their modeling of good ethics, good sportsmanship, time, effort and expertise will stay with sooooo many people for years to come! I am glad they will remain open for public sessions and roller skating events/parties. We will continue to patronize this beautiful rink always, whenever possible. And in the immortal words of Larry Sanford, we all will continue to ” skate, Skate, SKATE” there! Such a wonderful rink, …and your heartfelt contributions and generosity (affecting so many roller hockey lives) will never, ever, be forgotten! Continued success!

BREAKING NEWS – CRYSTAL PALACE SHUTS DOWN ROLLER HOCKEY PROGRAM

22 Tuesday Jul 2014

Las Vegas – After almost 20 seasons ‘The Little House of Champions’ is going dark – no more roller hockey at the legendary Crystal Palace roller rink on North Rancho Drive.

It was Larry Sanford, rink owner and an 8-Time Las Vegas Roller Coach of the Year, who made the decision. After he examined the financial results of a spring session of house roller, he told sons Micah and Dave Sanford “…….here’s what we’re going to do.…”

The rink stays open.

The roller hockey program is over.

Micah said “we are staying open but we’re going to do a lot more public skates, private parties and school skates. There is plenty of demand for those activities,” he said.

“We had about 11 teams in house roller this past session. It seemed like a lot of teams, but it wasn’t. Totalled we had about 50 players who actually paid. We’ve been as high as over 300 players. The dropoff is dramatic.”

He continued “…there is a big rink expense of having roller hockey here. We have an expensive lighting system above the rink. If a puck takes out a light, it will cost $350 or more to replace. And usually we lose three of those lights each season. There are workers, officials, scoreboard operators – all of it adds up.

“The real reason I think about all of this happening is because a lot of players skate in ice and roller. That’s really expensive when it comes to playing travel hockey. A lot of the roller players are playing ice hockey now.”

Micah, who was just named the head coach of the AA Las Vegas Storm bantam team, said “…our Storm bantam ice hockey team will be very solid this season and there is a Bantam A team at the Ice Center as well. Some of those players used to play roller, but not anymore.”

It also means the end of the great, medal-winning Las Vegas Tour Rebels travel roller teams.

Or does it?

“I am going to gather up all of the Tour Rebels jerseys,” he said. “If we get enough players who want to play roller, maybe we do it. But we won’t be practicing at Crystal Palace.”

Neither will the UNLV roller team. Micah said the Rebels will likely relocate to Adam Stio’s Southern Nevada Sports Centre roller rink.

+++++

For the first time in almost 20 years, the Las Vegas Tour Rebels did not send a travel team to the NARCh Nationals which is the World Series of roller. Micah said he would like to keep the Rebels NARCh Pro team together but he is not certain.

Gage Quinney of Las Vegas and the WHL Prince Albert Raiders will open their season against the Saskatoon Blades on home ice September 19, then go to Saskatoon on September 20.

Kenny Brooks of Las Vegas and Penn State begin their season Oct 10-11 with UConn coming into University Park, Pa. The Ticker – Sunday, July 20, 2014

After 11 days and hundreds of games, the AAU Olympic Games international roller tournament comes to a close today at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This was by far the longest roller tournament ever held in the city. The AAU game livesteams were the best we have seen in a long time.

Jason Zucker, who just signed for two more years with the NHL Minnesota Wild, was at the MLB Baseball All-Star game in Minnesota.

Bet you didn’t know there is a framed signed game-used hockey stick of Jason Zucker up on the south wall over at the Crystal Palace roller rink. That was where it all started for Jason when his hockey dad Scott took him into the ‘Little House of Champions” on North Rancho Drive. Jason was 3 years old.

Last month, the players and top coaches at Crystal Palace voted and named Jason the greatest roller player of all time in Las Vegas.

Micah Sanford and Chris Francis, who played for the AAU gold medal winning L.A. Pama Cyclones, are off on Wednesday to the NARCh Nationals in Estero, Fla. There they will skate for Outcasts of Arizona in NARCh Pro. There are 20 pro teams at the NARCh Nationals.

Bet you didn’t know that years ago the NHL Dallas Stars had Micah Sanford on its radar.

There is a big pic of the Battalion men’s roller team on the Southern Nevada Sports Centre facebook page. Led by Quincy Sa’ena’s 2 goals and Adam Stios’ 2 helpers, the Battalion won the Tuesday night league gold medal.

A new Wednesday Night season in adult hockey begins this week at the Las Vegas Roller Hockey Center, 800 Karen Ave.

===

Hockey coach Rob Pallin departs this Wednesday to Hungary where he will coach Sapa Fehervar A19.

Still no word where Adam Naglich, Chris Francis or Eddie Del Grosso will be playing this fall.
