Update – There were over 36,000 runners from all parts of the world in the Las Vegas Rock and Roll Marathon which began on Las Vegas Blvd in front of Mandalay Bay and finished in front of the Mirage Hotel-Casino on Sunday evening. Both Mary Cate and Curtis ran – and finished a 13.1 mile run which is a half-marathon. Curtis said there were “rock bands and fans rooting us on every step of the way.”  Mary Cate said she felt “pride and…happiness” when she crossed the finish line. Afterwards the two runners and our family had dinner in the coffee shop at Treasure Island. Curtis, our younger brother, brought some South Jersey WaWa ground coffee which is brewing now at our house. He returns home today on a 2 pm flight. Las Vegas – The sister – and our daughter – Mary Cate Zurfluh and our brother Curtis Samuels who lives in our hometown of Pennsville, New Jersey – are running 13.1 miles in the memory of our hockey son Eddie Samuels today at the Las Vegas Rock N Roll Marathon in the streets of downtown Las Vegas.

Mary Cate, a mother of two, is a former elementary school teacher who was once nominated as a Teacher of the Year, is now writer of children’s books which include Flash the Cat. She is married to Jay and their children are Ryan, 7, and Leah, 5. Mary Cate is also the co-author of our upcoming ‘Miracle at the Ice Arena’ Christmas story which will be released during Thanksgiving Week here on Vegashockey.net

Mary Cate wrote on Facebook “….I could barely run in August when Eddie passed but we kept getting up and going. He used to outrun me in the old days and made me laugh so much during our runs. I have felt Eddie running with me every step of the way in our training for this. My bib today says EDSAMS10.”

Curtis is our youngest brother. This will be his 13th run this year.  He has competed recently in the 10 mile Cow Run in Salem, New Jersey, the South Philly 10k, Wyoming Buffalo Stampede, New York City Firecracker on July 4 and the Ugly Mudder Trail Run in Reading, Pa..

He is a customer service manager for Sulzer Pumps in the Eastern Service Center in Bridgeport, N.J. Sulzer Pumps rebuilds pumps for power plants, refineries and nuclear plants.

Curtis said today “…The last time I spent time with Eddie we talked about his hockey days, what TV shows we both enjoyed watching and his plans for the future. My favorite part of our conversation was when we talked about our times together playing basketball in their backyard or shooting pool in his basement when the family lived in Pitman, New Jersey.”

“We always had a good times together. We miss you so much – love you always Eddie,” Curtis said.
