Anchorage – In a stunning announcement the ECHL Alaska Aces – once a powerful force and one of the greatest rivals ever for the ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers – are shutting down operations after this season. The Aces management cited a drop of attendance over over 1,500 fans per game the last two seasons and a loss of $600,000 in corporate sponsorships due mostly to a loss to jobs in greater Alaska. For years the Aces have been playing home games at the Sullivan Arena.
There were many loyal Aces fans who used to travel to Las Vegas and ring cowbells when the Aces scored against the Las Vegas Wranglers at The Orleans Arena on Tropicana Avenue. Rob Murray is the long times Aces head coach.
