IT’S CRUNCH TIME FOR UNLV REBELS ON SUPER BOWL WEEKEND

By Lee Samuels

Las Vegas – UNLV needs a couple of wins this weekend but to do it the Rebels according to head coach Anthony Greener “need to play with the intensity and grit like we did in our season-opening series against ASU.”

UNLV, ranked #11 nationally in ACHA D1, beat ASU 3-1, 3-2 in their first games of this season.

The Top 20 ranked teams will proceed to the post season ACHA D1 playoffs.

Injuries, some of them bad, have slowed down the Rebels since their road trip to brutally cold North Dakota a few weeks ago.

“So this is now huge weekend for us,” Greener said. “We must be good in our own end and break the puck out of our end.”

UNLV rarely loses on home ice before sellout crowds at City National Arena.  What is concerning for the Rebels is that ASU, 10-21-1 overall, is coming into town riding on a three-game win streak.

Here is a look at the last five games for both teams:

ARIZONA STATE (10-21-0 overall)

1-6 at Minot

2-10 at Minot

4-3 over Arizona

4-3 over Oklahoma

3-2 over Oklahoma

UNLV REBELS (16-8-0 overall, ranked #11)

2-6 at Minot

2-3 at Jamestown

2-4 at Jamestown

6-2 at Utah

5-1 at Utah

By Lee Samuels

Super Bowl week is here. The New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles are going at it on Sunday, Feb. 4 in Minneapolis. Here is how our experts are figuring who will win the biggest game of all.

Steve Allen, Las Vegas hockey dad (2017 winner here) – “Going with the Patriots by 10 points. Too much experience with Brady and Belichick. Patriots will win 30-20.”

Richie Crossley, great hometown defenseman now playing for the Las Vegas Cavalry – “Patriots win 32-17. The Eagles are not on the Patriots level. Tom Brady is the greatest.”

Eddie Del Grosso – Vegas Hockey Hall of Fame Defenseman – “Mark it down, Eagles by 24-21 for one reason – ’cause I hate the Patriots.”

Matt Edlin, long-time hockey coach and exec in Las Vegas – “Pats win 31-27, thank you for asking.” More from Matt: “Enjoy watching my nephew play on the Bantam A team here in Las Vegas and enjoy playing men’s league hockey.”

Anthony Greener, head coach UNLV Rebels – “I would love for Philly to win it for their city and their fans but I would never go against the best QB and Coach ever in NFL history. I just want this to be an interesting game like the one last year. Final score will be 24-17, Patriots.”

Zee Khan, UNLV – Vegas Hockey Best GM of the Year – “New England 24-17. Tom Brady, Bill Belichick too much experience. They will have a game plan that will make it too uncomfortable for QB Nick Foles.”

John McNicholas, Las Vegas hockey Dad – his son Mike is playing for NCAA New Hampshire University – “Patriots 31-24. 15-0 playoff record against non-regular season scheduled teams with Tom Brady as quarterback.”

Will ‘Money’ Munson – years ago Will and Eddie Samuels billetted together while playing for the NAHL Billings Bulls. Will was called ‘Money’ because he scored the biggest goals. Now to Will’s pick – “Patriots 31-14. Because they have Brady.” More from Will – he plays pickup hockey on a team called SNAFU at the ice arena in Riverside, Ca.

Adam Naglich – Vegas Hockey HOF in ice hockey and roller. When Adam played roller his teammates called him ‘Stick’ – “I think NE will win the game. Tom Brady is the reason because his experience will be too much to handle. Pats 31-16.”

Rob Pallin – Vegas Hockey HOF Coach who is now head coach of HC TWK Innsbruck in Austria – “I have to go with New England. My Vikings got beaten pretty bad by the Eagles. The Philly fans didn’t treat some people too well either. Score – Patriots 28-12.

Steve Pochiro, Las Vegas hockey Dad – “The Pats will win 34-15 – don’t think Philly is ready for this.”

Rob Proffitt, famous and great GM of the NAHL Fairbanks Ice Dogs. “When you are an Ice Dog, you are an Ice Dog forever,’ he says and he means it.  Now to the game – “Patriots. Brady is a winner period – 24-17.

Tony Robone, famous Las Vegas hockey Dad – “Patriots 31-24 – Brady and Belichick.”

Jimmy Samuels of Las Vegas and GM of ACHA D3 Kansas University and huge Eagles fan – “Eagles 45-0. I want Brady to cry.”

Greg Yochum, Las Vegas hockey Dad and treasurer at NAHA which governs hockey in Nevada – “Eagles win because I think their D-Line will control the game. Final score will be Eagles 31-27.”

Evan Zucker – when he played the game in Las Vegas he was a top scorer in ice and roller, a real sharpshooter – “Patriots win 38-27 because Brady is just that good.”

Scott Zucker, the most famous hockey Dad in Las Vegas – “24-7 Pats. Brady is just too good.”
