Las Vegas – In an all-out stunner Heath Mensch scored 3 times, JJ Williamson, William Jacob, Tristan Nelson also scored and goalie Zackary Ortolano was spectacular in the net as the Wally Lacroix-coached AA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 16u played a smart, intelligent game while taking apart AA Cal Wave 6-0 in the opening game of the Vegas Confetti Tournament today at the SoBe Ice Arena.

Lacroix, with two top players – star defenseman Trent Carter and rugged d-man Caden Berninger not available – blueprinted a tactical strategy which worked – a hard defensive scheme to force Cal Wave’s attackers…”to make mistakes on different areas of the ice and then we would capitalize on those mistakes.”

Having Ortolano – a top tier goalie in the Western region – helped as well for the Vegas Jr Golden Knights. He took care of much of the Cal Wave firepower while converted forward John Purdy played at a high level defensively to help seal off corners and leaky edges around the Vegas net.

And for Vegas player Tristan Nelson his goal – a wrist shot which blasted in – was ultra important in a different way.

Tristan, a Life Scout in the Boy Scout organization, helped raised thousands of dollars and also gave away “1,400 pairs of socks” which many of the Las Vegas homeless said they needed the most during the holidays.

“Like to help others – it’s inside of me,” Tristan said after the game.

From the Blue Line – On Saturday 1 pm the AA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 16u will take on Boulder Hockey Club at City National Arena.
