Las Vegas – The game of hockey is all about winning – who gets the most W’s – and guess what – the invading Arizona Wildcats have won more games than anyone in the universe of ACHA D1 this winter.
Check this out:
Most Wins 2018-19 Season
25 – Arizona Wildcats
23 – Mississippi State
22 – Adrian in Michigan
22 – Drexel
20 – Davenport
20 – Lindenwood
20 – Navy
UNLV is 17-5-1 and rarely loses on home ice but unquestionably is facing the best team this season in the cozy confines of the City National Arena.
The two teams are ranked like this – Arizona #6, UNLV #10.
UNLV has Jared Turcotte going to the Winter University Games in Russia. Arizona has its Anthony Cusanelli going there too. Cusanelli two years ago was picked the ACHA Rookie of the Year and before that was a NAPHL All-Star and a NAHL All-Star with the New Jersey Titans junior hockey team. He is a powerful force who can break from the pack and zero in on enemy nets.
Despite all of the mightyness of Arizona, UNLV is 10-1-0 on home ice.
When you take a longer look at this matchup – Arizona v UNLV – isn’t this really a prelude for the upcoming ACHA D1 20-team playoffs.
UNLV Rebels head coach Anthony Greener looks at these important weekend games this way:
“We looked at alot of film on what we did well and what they didn’t do so well. We are going to stick to our game plan and make sure we are just as physical as they are. Got to make sure we get pucks deep and behind their defense.”
UNLV’s top goal scorers this season include:
15 – Paxton Malone
13 – Cody Williams – one of the greatest Rebels ever with 97 career goals
9 – Joseph Kaszupski
9 – Jared Turcotte
6 – Bryce Woodward
UNLV has another factor here, the star play from Eric Williams who was recently voted as the Vegas Hockey Best Defenseman
From the Blue Line – UNLV planning to start goalie Erik Eidissen in Game One. Erik has a 2.11 gaa, 92.1% save percentage….Top UNLV line Friday will be Joseph Kaszupski, Cody Williams and Bryce Woodward….Eric Williams and Bas Assaf will be #1 defensive pair….Arizona’s top goal scorers include #11 Bayler Marshall with 24 goals, #15 Anthony Cusanelli with 18. Keep an eye right on those two weekend….UNLV’s all-time goal scorers are Mike Zenzola with 136 goals, Cody Williams 97, Anthony Greener 96, Sam Braniff 83…..Greener’s famous #96 jersey has been framed and raised on the south wall at the SoBe Ice Arena on North Rancho Drive….Braniff has been skating this season with the San Diego Skates in the Mountain West League.
