Opening Night

Colorado University at UNLV Rebels

City National Arena, Las Vegas – 7 pm

By Lee Samuels

Las Vegas –  For the first time in years Colorado University is coming into town without Eric Ballard, their head coach for four seasons. CU with Ballard had a record of 71-56-3 and made four straight trips to the playoffs.

CU’s new head coach is Benny Tollar.

And for UNLV Rebels head coach Anthony Greener – even with the CU coaching change – that means taking one more look at CU’s game films.

“Obviously all of the video we have on Colorado is from last few seasons with Ballard as head coach,” Greener said. “However we will touch bases by looking at what systems he had in place

“Our message to our players this week is simple – stick to our game plan, let’s get the puck north right away and put the puck into the net.”

In UNLV’s annual pre-season scrimmage game before a sellout crowd at City National the Rebels looked bigger, stronger, faster with great goal-tending. The Rebels then announced Bas Assaf as captain with Jake Saxe, Eric Williams and Sean Plonski as co-captains.

Williams is an extraordinary defenseman – a great skater who has great positioning on the ice and makes difficult plays look relatively easy – the mark of a tremendous athlete.

Another thing favoring the Rebels is playing on home ice.

In the last four seasons UNLV is an amazing 44-7 at home.

From the Blue Line – The UNLV vs Colorado game on Saturday has a 2:30 pm start time at City National Arena, Las Vegas…In their recent scrimmage game UNLV started a top line with Tristan Mayer, Paxton Malone, Jake Saxe – each is skilled and a major goal scorer.
