“Wanting to go to Scottsdale, Ariz., for the Super Bowl? The average price per ticket on Stub Hub as of Tuesday morning was US$7,573. . . . The Montreal Canadiens wore those baby blues last night as they entertained the Ottawa Senators. The Habs lost, 5-4, and now are 0-6-1 in those uniforms, while being outscored 31-14.“

The great hockey writer Gregg Drinnan wrote this today:

Jan Ludvig, the head coach of the junior B Kamloops Storm of the Kootenay

KamStormnew

International Junior Hockey League, has been suspended for three games after receiving a gross misconduct during a 4-2 loss to the Posse in Princeton on Saturday night. Ludvig was penalized after putting a towel on a stick and waving it at 12:01 of the third period. . . . Ludvig is in his first season as the Storm’s head coach. He played one season (1981-82) with the Kamloops Jr. Oilers, before going on to play in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres. He also was a long-time scout with the Devils and later the Boston Bruins. . . . The Storm, it seems, already is planning a Towel Power promotion.

====================

Las Vegas – The great hockey coaches at all levels of the game construct a team first from the back – the goalies – then the defensemen and at last the goal scorers.

UNLV Rebels head coach Anthony Greener knows all about that.

“We are fortunate we have three goalies – Vince Benedetto, Landon Pavlisin and Zach Wickson – who we can put into a game on any night. We are running hot right now with the goal-tending we are getting that is needed to make a run for the National Championship.

“We want game-changers on our team – goalies with confidence and moxie – goalies who can steal you a game when needed. And that is what we are getting this season,” said coach Greener.

Coach Wally Lacroix’ AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 15u were away from home over the weekend.

“We lost to the AAA Pitt Vengeance in a morning game 3-2. Kam Laskaska in the net for us. Lost to South Hill Panthers from PA 3-2. Kellen Hardy was our goalie.

“Me, I am extremely proud of our group for their continued effort – we have some injuries and some players who were not feeling that well.

“Coach Todd and myself couldn’t be prouder. We finished the weekend with 6 forwards, 4 defensemen. What we are asking – and getting – to play with such a short bench is remarkable.

“What a special group of young men we get to coach,” coach Wally said.

Las Vegas – Now this was a very special Saturday evening. On ‘Military Night’ with a sold out frenzied City National Arena, the UNLV Rebels took down and beat invading ACHA D1 Oklahoma University 4-0 to sweep the weekend series on Saturday night. REBELS 3 STARS OF THE GAME

#1 Cole Wyatt

#2 Alec Johnson

#3 Goalie ‘The Wall’ Zach Wickson

====

By Lee Samuels

Las Vegas – The great teams – like the UNLV Rebels with so many ultra-skilled tricky goal scorers and an awesome goalie like ‘The Wall’ Zach Wickson make winning look so easy – as it was in a 5-0 shutdown over ACHA D1 Oklahoma City University before a totally sold out, festive, cheering hometown crowd on Friday night. The Rebels won practically everything there is in a game including faceoffs and fiery puck battles in the attack areas.

“This was a good team team win,” said UNLV’s head coach Anthony Greener. “Let’s hope we come back and do it again on Saturday night.“

The goal scorers for the Rebels, in order:

Jaedin Ness

Cole Wyatt

Kyle Quinn

Cole Wyatt

Azzaro Tingling

From the Blue Line – One of the biggest crowds we’ve ever seen was packed into City National Arena – including very young fans in the stands who danced to the awesome rock music all night long. …….The Rebels have an awesome skillset, from the moment they move the puck from one end of the ice to the attack areas. It is really something to see, the tricky passing while skating at high speed. This is, to me, is a very strong, ultra-skilled UNLV team….Referee Chase Tannenburg is special, he knows how to keep a game at a cool temperature in his unique way communicating with enforcers, etc.

UNLV goes right back vs Oklahoma City University at City National Arena on Saturday – faceoff 7:30 pm.

From the Blue Line – UNLV is unique in that their games attracts fans of all ages – including older folks whose sons or daughters played hockey at a high level years ago and the very very young fans – like in the 5, 6 and 7 area – who like to dance and hop around to the rink music. There is a lot involved in getting a community behind a team and the Rebels, in our opinion, are doing just that.

Pittsburgh – In a thriller Las Vegas goalie Kellen Hardy was a shining star as coach Wally Lacroix AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 15u tied the PHA Icemen 1-1 at the Frozen Pond Arena. Las Vegas had more shots 41-17. On Saturday in Pittsburgh coach Wally’s team plays the PHA Icemen one more time. Faceoff 10:30 am eastern time.

Update – Fuzzy Atchison of Las Vegas and the AAA Windy City Storm 16u went to St. Louis for 2 games vs the AAA Jr. Blues and his team won both games by scores of 5-2 and 8-2. Fuzzy had a natural hat trick in the 1st game and 2 beautiful cross crease passes for assists in the 2nd game.

Last weekend they traveled to Cleveland for a Showcase, the team finished 2-2 but for the 2nd weekend in a row Fuzz notched a natural hat trick this time vs the Buffalo Jr Sabres. He also scored an additional goal vs Honeybaked and put up 2 more assists 1 against the  Cleveland Barons  and 1 vs the Jr Sabres in their 2nd meeting of the weekend.

Erik Atchison and the NAHL Bismarck Bobcats took 5 of 6 points vs the 2nd place Aberdeen Wings in a 6-0 win which Erik tallied an assist  followed by a 4-3 OT loss, and then a huge 10-4 win where Erik started the scoring just 90 seconds into the game with a gorgeous backhand to forward goal. The win was a monumental victory for coach Layne Sedivie, his 400th all with the Bobcats. The team mobbed him on the bench at the conclusion of the game.

Flashback Story – from 2015 – The World of Kimmie Zucker…..

Readers here dig deep into our archives each and every day. There are hundreds and hundreds of stories about Vegas Hockey on this website. The most read is the Last Skate at the Santa Fe Stations story. However this past week this particular story – The World of House Hockey – Kimmie Zucker – is the #1 most searched. It was written and posted here years ago.

By Lee Samuels

Las Vegas – “Are you writing about me again – one more time,” house hockey player Paige Nowag of Team Red was asking at the Las Vegas Ice Center on Flamingo Ave last night.

To her left was linemate Kimmie Zucker who laughed real hard in the lobby of the ice rink.

“What’s going on?” asked teenage playmaker Jimmy Samuels, leaning on his hockey stick.

And then, on a very cold winter night at the Las Vegas Ice Center, it all came flashing back.

The Paige Nowag story.

On a summer night about a year ago over at the Crystal Palace roller rink on North Rancho Drive, Paige Nowag was skating in a house roller hockey game. So was her best rink pal teenage Kimmie Zucker. At the red line – the center of the rink – there was an earthquake shaker of a collision. Somehow, someway, Paige and Kimmie ran into each other and Paige was on the floor.

As Kimmie leaned over, Paige said she was hurt bad, couldn’t get up, needed help. She cried out ‘oh, my gosh.’ At last a hockey dad went over the rink wall, gently picked up Paige, took her to the Crystal Palace area where there are rows of tables.

Paige was placed onto the floor as a small crowd gathered around her.

Then, Jason Zucker – yes, that Jason Zucker then with the NHL Minnesota Wild – came over to take a look.

“Elevate her left leg. Let me take a look,” Jason said. He carefully touched her left ankle which was beginning to swell.

When Dr Jason was finished, medics were called.

===

Last night at the Las Vegas Ice Center, Paige, Kimmie and Jimmy Samuels were on Team Red which beat Team Blue 6-3. Jimmy had 4 assists.

Or maybe he had one goal, three assists?

His hockey dad Rich Samuels was at the rinkboards and said he had hard evidence.

At least that’s what he said he saw on his camera.

“I know Jimmy scored a goal. Look at this,” he said.

There was a picture of a red-jersey #29 Jimmy Samuels in front of the Team Blue net.  There was a black hockey stick in front of red 29.

“That’s Jimmy’s stick. He scored the goal,” Rich said while looking deep into the back of his camera. He zoomed in on the Big Picture.

“Don’t write about that,” Jimmy said. “I’m good with the 4 assists.”

THE 2022 VEGAS HOCKEY AWARDS ARE RIGHT HERE……..

Jason Zucker of the Pittsburgh Penguins skates against the New York Rangers at PPG PAINTS Arena on December 20, 2022 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Jason Zucker of Las Vegas gets set for action here for the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins……

Source – NHL Pittsburgh Penguins hockey website…

======

Born in Southern California, Zucker moved to Las Vegas with his family when he was an infant and would become both the first Nevada-raised draft pick and player in NHL history.

The forward was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the second round (No. 59) of the 2010 NHL Draft, and it’s no wonder he became one of the fastest skaters in the League. His mother, Natalie, is a former competitive figure skater, and his father, Scott, is a general contractor who built ice and roller rinks when Jason was young, allowing his then kindergarten-aged son hours a day of free skating time.

Having followed an older brother into ice hockey, Jason began traveling out of state at age 10. At 17, he played the first of two seasons with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.

Zucker was one of two players (Jack Campbell) to win three gold medals within a calendar year, helping the United States win the World Junior Under-18 tournament in 2009 and 2010, and the 2010 World Junior Championship. Zucker also won a bronze medal at the 2011 Worlds.

Already committed to the University of Denver before being drafted, Zucker played two seasons there. He had 91 points (45 goals, 46 assists) in 78 college games and turned pro at the end of the 2011-12 season.

As fast as Zucker is, his NHL career started slowly. He had eight goals and 12 points in 47 games from 2011-14.

Zucker spent most of the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season with Houston of the American Hockey League. He scored his first NHL goal Feb. 17, 2013 in a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings. A Jason Zucker banner is on the north wall inside of the Las Vegas Ice Center.

In Las Vegas one of Jason’s first hockey coaches was Wally Lacroix. Before Jason went to the NHL Player Draft in LA it was coach Rob Pallin who worked Jason on his skating skills.

Regarding head coaches Brittany Brooks, an awesome hockey player herself, has put together an exciting totally awesome Las Vegas Storm girls 16u team at the Las Vegas Ice Center.

AA Girls 12U

AA Arizona Kachinas 2, AA Las Vegas Storm girls 12u team 2 (tie) at Las Vegas Ice Center

Las Vegas had more shots 25-7. Star player Maddie Mang of Las Vegas gave it her all with awesome moves to get the puck deep into attack areas before a very large crowd on the North Rink at the super chilled Ice Center. This looks like, to me, a very special team as the players – no matter how much adversity they may feel during a hard game – really do care for each other – just an observation, Lee….

Saturday Breaker – Coach Wally Lacroix AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 15u are scheduled today to take on the AAA Arizona Bobcats 15u at the Ice Den in Chandler, Arizona. Best Stat of the Day – In UNLV’s two weekend games the Rebels scored 29 times and allowed only one goal – Lee

Friday, Dec 9, 2022

By Lee Samuels

Las Vegas – What a spectacular performance. The UNLV Rebels, coached by Anthony Greener and Nick Robone, unleashed a spread offense which drove deep into attack areas enroute to a 13-1 win over a very strong ACHA D1 Canisius College team from Buffalo before a large crowd at City National Arena on a cold winter evening here in town.

The Rebels 3 Stars of the game were

#1 Nick Flanders

#2 Azzard Tingley

#3 Vince Benedetto – goalie – awesome effort in this game

After the game coach Greener said “……proud of our players – our team – we started off great early, then started to create some bad habits – always play the game the right way and good things will happen. We started the second period with three goals from three different lines. Really, really proud of our players – but the weekend isn’t over yet. We have one more game to play.”

Las Vegas goal scorer – and captain of Canisius College’s hockey team – Mikey Yochum – gave it all he had against a UNLV Rebels team which countered with an amazing effort from Rebels goalie Vince Benedetto who stopped practically everything headed his way.

Mikey’s hockey Mom and Dad were inside City National Arena to root for he and his team.

From the Blue Line – Leroy Garcia, a major Las Vegas roller hockey star in the Micah Sanford era, was at the game – and enjoying it, he said.…..It was very very cold outside of the arena, in the mid-40s with a sharp wind blowing…...

UNLV’s goal scorers in order:

#1 – Luke Burke

#2 – Nick Flanders

#3 – Brenden Fehlig

#4 – Azzaro Tingling

#5 – Nick Flanders

#6 – Paxton Malone

#7 – Gunnar Smith

#8 – Riley Jensen

#9 – Michael Boutoussov

Special to Vegas Hockey

St. Louis – Rob Pallin’s 16AA VJGK team started the weekend strong with a 5-3 win over the Midwest Blackbirds in St. Louis, MO on Friday. Down 0-2 early in the 1st period, Ryan Williams and Caden Ross each scored one to bring the game to a 2-2 tie.  Luca Doremus scored the next goal to give VJGK the lead and Carson Rowe netted one to put the team ahead 4-2.  The Blackbirds then capitalized on a 3 on 5 power play, closing the gap to 4-3. Conner Bintz then found the back of the net to bring the score to 5-3. Goalie Shayn Tarolla was strong in net and held off numerous power play opportunities.

Las Vegas – On Thursday evening invading San Diego State took a giant step up into an ACHA D1 game vs the UNLV Rebels who scored a crushing 16-0 win before an awesome crowd last night at City National Arena. It wasn’t a hard game – not much heavy checking etc – as the Rebels went to their skill game to feint and drive towards to the San Diego net.

Here are UNLV’s 16 goal scorers in order:

Brenden Fehlig, Jaxsen Wyatt, Brenden Fehlig, Max Beller, Brendan Manning, Alex Johnson, Paxton Malone, Alec Johnson, Mike Boutoussov, Bradley Golant, Jaedin Ness, Brenden Fehlig, Joey Carollo, Daniel Fisher, Max Johnson and Cole Wyatt. UNLV’s goalie was ‘The Wall,’ the very popular 6’6″, 195 lb Zach Wickson.

From the Blue Line – The more we see Rebels goal scorer Caleb Strong, the more we like his intense, very thoughtful skilled drives to the net….Coach Matt Johnson of the AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 16u was at the game last night….Officials Leavitt and Tannenburg were outstanding in this game – collectively they have an unique style to keep the game temperature down.

Next here – Mikey Yochum of Las Vegas and ACHA D1 Canisius College of Buffalo will be here in Las Vegas tonight – Friday – at City National. Faceoff 7:30 pm. This will be a much more challenging game for the Rebels.

Las Vegas goal scorer Mikey Yochum – with Canisius College in Buffalo – said he’s thrilled to be returning to Las Vegas in a big game for Canisius College vs the UNLV Rebels on Friday night at City National Arena.

“Really excited,” Mikey said. “I am excited about coming home and playing in front of family and friends. Growing up in Las Vegas we never got to play a lot of home games – we were always on the road. We were able to play for coach Greener and coach Robone on Peewee, Bantam and Midget levels. So it’s really going to be fun to play against them and to see each of them again this weekend.”

Las Vegas – In a high action game from start to finish coach Matt Johnson’s AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 16u beat the Arizona Bobcats 16u 5-3 today before a very large crowd in a Sunday afternoon game on the west rink at City National Arena.

This was a high-tension game with a lot of hard checks. Las Vegas had an awesome game with sharp passing and hard skating to win the game.

For Las Vegas Connor Beers had two goals, Quinn Steffen two goals and Danny Madison scored. Goalie Kyle Adrian had an awesome game for Las Vegas.

Matt Johnson, head coach for AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights, said “I thought we played well in this game. Overall this weekend wasn’t our best – we had spurts but not enough consistency. Our D core and goaltending is very strong. They are our glue.

“Even though we scored five times today we are still struggling to score goals overall. Our powerplay today was better – but not at the effectiveness we need. And, we need to stay out of the box. We need to keep the momentum moving in the right direction, keep climbing, always advance, never retreat.”

From the Blue Line – The famous Brent Gough is head coach of the Arizona Bobcats…Again, officiating was awesome during this game – linesmen included the great Cody Castro.

It was a hard physical game in all three periods.

“I thought we played well – we just made some mistakes and unfortunately the puck ended up in our net,” said Matt Johnson, head coach of the Vegas Jr Golden Knights 16u. “We know our power plays have to get better – but we want to add this – for the most part we thought our competitive nature was right up there all during this game.”

“They are good, well coached, skilled,” said Anthony Greener, head coach of the UNLV Rebels. “We need to make sure we are physical and make them pay every chance we get.”

====

It’s been nearly seven years since Liberty University’s ACHA Division I men’s hockey team has flown farther West than North Dakota for a hockey game. That was Feb. 13, 2016, when it traveled to Tempe, Ariz., to face Arizona State University in its first season at the NCAA Division I level, a 7-0 setback.

This week, the Flames are in Las Vegas gearing up for Thursday night’s game against NCAA DI Alaska Anchorage — which was swept by ASU over the weekend — at City National Arena, the practice facility for the NHL’s Las Vegas Golden Knights. Liberty, ranked No. 4 in this week’s ACHA DI computer rankings, will then challenge No. 2-ranked UNLV — which knocked it out in the quarterfinal round of last season’s ACHA DI National Championships near St. Louis — in a weekend series on the Rebels’ home ice.

“We’re really looking forward to the opportunity to play three games against two great teams — to play another NCAA Division I program and two games against the (No. 2) ACHA team in the country,” Liberty Head Coach Kirk Handy said before the Rebels dropped from the No. 1 spot. “At end of the day, getting out here on trips like this is important to see where we will stack up at the end of the year. I am excited for our guys. They realize the importance of this series and they’ve been working hard, learning how to compete at a high level consistently in practice, and that translates into games.”

“We’re going to have to bring our A game, for sure,” junior forward Kam Ottenbreit added. “Three (games) in three (nights), it’s going to be the toughest stretch we’ve had, but I think we’re ready for it. The intensity is high. We’re fired up and itching to get going.”

After dropping four out of five games, the first two at new No. 1 Minot State (N.D.) on Oct. 7-8, the Flames have turned things around and are now riding a five-game winning streak into Vegas.

“All the boys are clicking right now,” Ottenbreit said. “The coaches have been holding us a lot more accountable in practice …and everybody has bought in right now and the intensity is super high in the room. The guys are very motivated to get out there and prove that we can play against anybody, with anybody, and we can beat anybody.”

The Flames will get a glimpse of what to expect from the Seawolves and Rebels on Wednesday when they watch them play head-to-head. They may have some down time away from the ice to clear their minds, get some fresh air, and exercise out in the heat of the Mohave Desert in southern Nevada.

“The coaches do a really good job and understand that there are times we need to focus on other things besides hockey, to be able to relax so that when we get to the rink, we’re fully dialed in,” Ottenbreit said.

Scouting Preview Games 15-17: Liberty (10-4) vs. Alaska Anchorage (4-8, 2-8 NCAA DI), Thursday at 10 p.m. EST at City National Arena in Las Vegas; No. 4 Liberty (10-4) at No. 2 UNLV (7-3, 7-0 ACHA DI), Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m. EST at City National Arena. Both games against the Rebels will be streamed live on the UNLV Hockey YouTube channel.

Erik Atchison’s OT Goal Lifts Bismarck Bobcats Over St. Cloud

November 12, 2022

BISMARCK, N.D.–Erik Atchison of Las Vegas had been the victim of bad puck luck for far too long. With only one goal in his first 22 shots on net–not including numerous posts–as a Bobcat, Atchison cashed in the overtime winning goal to defeat the St. Cloud Norsemen 3-2 on Friday.

Atchison skated the puck all the way up through the neutral zone, crossed into the high slot in the St. Cloud end, and fired a shot just over the right leg pad of goaltender Tomas Bolo. The goal came with 9.8 seconds remaining in overtime, meaning Atchison’s opportunity may have been the final chance for either team in the period.

“(Erik) has been well overdue,” head coach Layne Sedevie said. “He had chances again in this game. A really good play, too.”

Both teams exchanged one-goal leads in regulation. Bismarck’s Alexander Palchik and St. Cloud’s Ryan Cutler each scored in the second period. The Norsemen took advantage of a turnover in the Bobcats’ zone to grab a 2-1 lead early in the second. The Bobcats quickly responded with a Vertti Jantunen game-tying goal only 34 seconds later.

“I felt like we deserved that extra point,” Sedevie said. “A couple mistakes, I thought our penalty kill was really good. We had one mistake and it cost us … I thought the guys worked hard and got the end result they deserve.”

The Bobcats outshot St. Cloud 35-26 and were in control of much of the game. The Norsemen’s 35 shots against are nine above their season average, making it an above-average head-to-head performance. Bismarck has now won four of the five games against St. Cloud this season.

The VFW Sports Center crowd, who dug their way out of nearly two feet of snow in the area, saw the Bobcats’ first home overtime victory since April 3, 2021. The club has now won back-to-back games and looks for a weekend sweep tonight against St. Cloud. Tickets are on sale now at tickets.bismarckbobcats.com and on the free Bobcats mobile app.

Sunday, November 6, 2022 – It was a heartbreaking finish for coach Wally Lacroix and his AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 15u who lost 5-4 to the AAA Madison Capitals 15u – historically an elite team – in a consolation game today at the CCM Tournament in Omaha. Coach Wally said “we played against a strong team and were down 4-2 late in the third period and had a great push to tie the game. A bouncing puck got past us and they went up 5-4. We pulled our goalie and our young men gave it everything they had – even hitting a post with a shot. Both of our goalies played today. We were very proud of our effort. Our losses here were each by one goal – we competed at a high level in each and every game in Omaha.”

=====

Saturday, November 5, 2022 – What an awesome thrilling game before a sold out City National Arena on Saturday. Coach Rob Pallin’s AA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 16u won 3-2 over Faith Lutheran High School’s bigger imposing team in one of the best games played here in Las Vegas this season.

The big crowd was really into it. The AA Vegas Jr Golden Knights forwards feathered the puck while passing it on attack runs. Faith Lutheran actually had more shots 26-20 but it was VGK’s quick tricky movements which got them within firing range. The game was 1-1 in the second period, then the AA VGK 16u scored on breakaways to pin down the big win.

Coach Rob Pallin noted after the game “…..we are 3-0-0 against Faith Lutheran but it could easily be 0-3 – we won games by 3-2 shootout, 3-2 OT and this one 3-2. We won each game by a centimeter. I didn’t like our first period, we were totally outplayed. We made some adjustments in the second, third periods and played much better as a team. Our goalies were very very good tonight and we had a very nice powerplay goal.“

Goal scorers for VGK 16u were Ryan Williams, Luca Doremus (2). VGK goalies Varkis Baligian and Shayne Tarolla split time in the net. Each had an awesome game. The AA VGK 16u lead the series vs Faith Lutheran H.S., 3 -0. Assists for VGK in this game came from Caden Herrera, Anze Gudino and Tate Morrison.

There were a lot of hockey folks at the game including Matt Johnson, head coach of the AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 16u. Although the game had ultra heat there were no real problems with players on the ice or with fans from both teams.

Officiating was awesome as well during this game – Lee

Saturday Breaker – Coach Wally Lacroix’ AAA Vegas Jr Golden Knights 15u lost today but are still alive in the big CCM Tournament in Chicago and will next take on the AAA Ohio Prospects 15u on Sunday – such an intense tournament!

“Kellen Hardy (goalie) played a great game – I feel for our young men – we lose 1-0 in the morning but an unlucky draw gave us just a 1:45 break between games. Our young men battled with every ounce of energy they had – Kellen had timely saves to keep us tied 2-2. Not the outcome we wanted losing in a quarterfinal game in a 4 x 4 overtime.

“We play in a consolation game in the morning.”

The Skatin’ Rebels faced off against the Sun Devils four times during the 2021-22 season, walking away with 3-1 record.

Overall, the Rebels scored 21 goals against the Sun Devils out of the 187 shots taken on net.

The Sun Devils earned 11 goals throughout the four games, only seeing 141 shots against goal.

final matchup, making 27 saves against 30 shots faced (90%).

AA VEGAS JR GOLDEN KNIGHTS 14U WIN THE GOLD MEDAL IN SALT LAKE CITY!

By Summer Bottenberg

October 21-23, 2022 – The Dustin Coldren coached Vegas Jr. Golden Knights 14UAA Bantam team won gold – first place! – at the National Showcase Hockey tournament in Salt Lake City, UT.

The Vegas Jr. Golden Knights Bantam 14UAA team traveled to Salt Lake City, UT this past weekend to compete in the National Showcase Hockey tournament. This tournament featured teams from Dallas, Texas, Vancouver, Washington, St. Louis, Missouri, and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The tournament had 4 round robin games with the first-place team after round robin games advancing directly to the championship match. The 2nd and 3rd place teams would have to face off in the semi-finals to earn a chance to play for the title in the finals on Sunday, Oct.23.

In Vegas’s first round robin game of the tournament, they faced the 7th ranked team in Washington, the Vancouver Jr. Rangers.  This game turned out to be a scrappy one with the Jr. Rangers receiving two-2 and 10s, 2-minute minor penalty plus a 10-minute misconduct, and five-2 minute minor penalties totaling 34 penalty minutes for the Jr. Rangers while the Jr. Golden Knights racked up 14 penalty minutes. While the penalty minutes for the Jr. Rangers would prove costly as Vegas scored two power play goals by #32, Tommy Trent (GWG), unassisted, and #72 Noah Luong with the assist from #8, Elliot Murch. The penalty minutes for the Jr. Knights didn’t seem to phase them as two of the 8 goals scored came short handed from #8, Nicholas Gallagher, unassisted, and #67 William Lefebvre, with the assist from #17 Eric Savenkov and Vegas successfully defending a 3 on 5.  Goaltender, Zane Parish, almost earned a shutout with the exception of an accidental redirection from a shot from a Vancouver player from the right face-off circle, off of, defenseman, #88 Liam Butsavich’s stick at 1:30 remaining in the 3rd period. Parish faced 12 SOG, while the Jr. Rangers goalie was peppered with 38 shots on goal. Vegas would open up the tournament with a good first game domination with an 8-1 victory with additional goals scored by #8 Elliot Murch (2), #32 Tommy Trent (2), #17 Eric Savenkov (1), and #75 Collin Davis (1).

The second game of the tournament would turn out to be another physical game, again with a lot of penalties, this time against the 10th ranked team in Texas, the McKinney North Stars who Vegas would eventually face again in the semi-finals. Penalty minutes for the North Stars totaled 19 minutes which included a 5-minute major and 10-minute misconduct for boarding #2 William “Larry” Larrison. Vegas would capitalize on the major call with #32 Tommy Trent scoring. Vegas would end up being a frequent visitor of the penalty box tallying 20 penalty minutes over 10 penalties of their own which did not help their scoring opportunities.  North Stars got off to a rocky start with the goaltender not controlling his temper and language and earned a misconduct which Vegas’s #88 Liam Butsavich and the power play team didn’t waste any time only taking 15 seconds to score the power play goal on an assist from #8 Elliot Murch.  Vegas being in the penalty box frequently, gave the North Stars plenty of opportunities to score, but thanks to the penalty kill lines, they were only able to net one power play goal in the second period during a 3 on 5 to tie up the game at one a piece. Cash Creel would net the game winning goal shortly after to put Vegas up 2-1. #32 Tommy Trent’s power play goal late in the 3rd period would give Vegas some breathing room to hold on to the 3-1 lead and victory. #29 Vinny Vitale was in net for the win for Vegas, facing 14 shots on net while the goaltender for the North Stars would face over double that at 33.

The third game of the tournament Vegas faced the Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (CDA) at the Olympic sheet of ice at The Ice Sheet Arena, home of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) Ogden Mustangs. The Olympic sized sheet of ice perhaps allowing Vegas to control the puck more and keep possession not giving many scoring opportunities to CDA, while conversely giving Vegas many scoring opportunities which #26 Tripp Reynolds would take advantage of as he scored a quad, four goals, two in the first period, one in the 2nd and one in the 3rd, including the game winning power play goal in the 1st  period leading to the 6-1 victory over CDA. Goals also scored by #67 William Lefevbre, assisted by #28 Nicholas Gallagher, and #32 Tommy Trent, unassisted. Goaltender #31 Zane Parish was in net for Vegas and faced 15 shots while the goaltender for CDA faced 33 shots.

The 4th game of the tournament Vegas faced a tougher opponent in the 5th ranked team in Missouri, also the only other team with the same record as Vegas with 3 wins and 0 losses, the St. Louis Knights. At this point in the tournament, Vegas had the first-place spot due to goal differential, one of these teams were going to come away with a loss. Who would it be? This contest would be decided at the Utah Olympic Oval in SLC, UT. The loss would mean that the loser would have to play an additional game the following morning to get back to the championship game in the afternoon. Which team would grind the hardest for the win? Grind they did. Vegas started off the scoring capitalizing on an interference penalty by St. Louis at 6:23 remaining in the first period with #32 Tommy Trent scoring, unassisted. Vegas had all of the momentum and control in the first period. That control would evaporate in the second period and leading in the third as St. Louis netted the next three goals with the last coming at 12:06 remaining in the 3rd period. The momentum had swung in favor of the St. Louis team. Could Vegas get it back? A strategic time out was called in the third period after the 3rd goal for St. Louis to give Vegas a chance to regroup and to get the momentum swinging back in their direction, and it would. With time running out on the clock, #28, Nicholas Gallagher would score to cut the lead to 1 with an assist by #32 Tommy Trent. With less than two minutes in the game, a broken play off the stick of #93 Evan Vohwinkle would see the puck land on the stick of defenseman #2 William “Larry” Larrison, would walk in the puck to just outside the right face off circle and throw and hard, low shot over the left leg pad and under the left arm of the goal tender tying the game up at 3 goals a piece. After that, we would see St. Louis use their only time out to pull their goaltender and strategize the 6 on 4 man advantage for the remainder of the game. Vegas would battle down in the defensive zone, but losing two key faceoffs giving opportunities to St. Louis to take the lead. Vegas had an opportunity to shoot at the empty net, but were not able to get the shot lined up, resulting in a defensive zone face off. That face off proved to be detrimental to the Vegas Jr. Golden Knights as St. Louis would score on goaltender #29 Vinny Vitale with 35.5 seconds remaining in the 3rd period and Vegas would receive their first loss of the tournament in the final score of 3-4.  #29 Vinny Vitale would face 18 shots in the loss while the goaltender for St. Louis faced 22. A relatively balanced game once all said and done at the end. No doubt these two teams would face each other in the championship game.

Now the stage was set, the final round robin game concluded, the play-off games set, the seeding would reveal that Vegas would have to face the McKinney North Stars in their 5th game of the tournament in the semi-finals Sunday morning at 9:30 am again at the Utah Olympic Oval with the victor having a quick turnaround and playing in the championship match at 2:00 pm that afternoon at the same facility.  Who would be up to the task? No doubt the McKinney North Stars would be looking for revenge in their earlier loss to the Knights 3-1 and they would be coming at them. Vegas, having faced this opponent before made a strategic change to their style of play and that was to stay out of the penalty box. If they could just stay out of the penalty box and keep rolling their lines, they could possibly route the McKinney North Stars again.  This game would see the least penalties of the tournament thus far for both teams with the North Stars only conceding one power play to the Knights which they could not capitalize on and at 6:40 remaining in the 1st period, the North Stars would slot the first goal and take the early lead. Both teams battled back and forth and in the 2nd period, Vegas would tie the game with 10:16 remaining on a shot from #17 Eric Savenkov, assisted by #2 William “Larry” Larrison. Who would win the chance to advance to the championship? That would be decided on a shot from forward #14 Josh Lopez at 4:21 remaining in the third period, assisted by #37 Aiden “Fitzy” Fitzgerald. Vegas would be successful in killing off the remainder of the time with the steady goaltending of #31 Zane Parish facing 6 shots on goal with 5 saves while Vegas again peppering the opposing goaltender with 34 shots on goal.  Vegas stuck to their strategy and stayed out of the penalty box, not earning one penalty. While penalty box attendant and father to #28 Nicholas Gallagher, Nick Gallagher, was lonely in the box, he wouldn’t have wanted it any other way, he commented after the game, “you guys stay out on the ice.”

Not many tournaments do you have to play 6 games to win the championship, but this tournament, could see just that if the Vegas Jr. Golden Knights win. Game #6 for Vegas, only game #5 for St. Louis. St. Louis already had the advantage leading into the game, they were able to get a good nights sleep not having to check out of their hotel early in the morning to drive 40 minutes to the rink for a semi-final match at 9:30 am. They didn’t even have to get up early in the cold, snowy weather of Utah to go to the rink to watch the game to see who they might play due to game being live streamed on a parent’s YouTube channel, Larrison Sports Broadcasting. The stars were seemingly already aligning in favor of St. Louis. Could Vegas overcome all of these challenges? Would they be up to the challenge? Which team would have more grit? Vegas would implement the strategy they used in their semi-final game to stay out of the penalty box to give their team a chance against this comparatively skilled team. 1st period would come and go without any penalties nor goals scored. Both teams were battling and bending, but unwilling to break. A little over halfway through the second period, we would see St. Louis net the first goal with 6:08 remaining. 1-0 St. Louis. 3rd period, Vegas would come out hungry, looking for a game winning goal, shortly into the 3rd period, #2 William “Larry” Larrison gets caught pinching in on the attack which allowed a counter 2 on 1 for St. Louis, Vitale makes the initial save which pulls him to the left side of his crease as the puck was dropped back to an awaiting St. Louis player just outside the slot and in the faceoff circle to the right of Vitale. Larrison hustling back on defense recognizes his goaltender out of position and a potential open net shot coming and goes down to one knee and making himself as big as possible to block as much of the open net, very Alec Martinez like block, which could end up being a big play for Vegas. Vegas would dump the puck in to #67 Lefebvre doing the work down below the goal line to maintain possession able to get time to send a centering puck to the front of the net to an awaiting #28 Nicholas Gallagher who would lift the puck over the goaltender for the tying goal with 10:55 remaining in the 3rd period.  1-1 would be the end of regulation time and the teams would head to a 5 minute, stop time, 3 on 3 overtime. After some consultation with Vegas players and coach Dustin Coldren, no doubt working out their 3 on 3 strategy since this would be the first time that the players have encountered this situation in a tournament this season with having not practiced this exact situation much at all during practices.  The starting overtime lineup to take the ice for Vegas was #88 Liam Butsavich, #26 Tripp Reynolds, and #32 Tommy Trent. Vegas won the OT face off, #26 Reynolds getting a backhanded chance from the left side of the net in close, but puts it over into the netting, the stoppage allow a change for Vegas where we saw #32 Trent and #26 Reynolds head to the bench and #17 Eric Savenkov and #28 Nicholas Gallagher to the face-off circle. Gallagher forcing St. Louis to drop the puck back to their man behind their blue line and then again forcing that same player to mishandle the puck and allow #88 Liam Butsavich to pick up the puck.  With the St. Louis player’s line mates up ice, #88 Liam Butsavich would curl around to the center of the ice unobstructed and fade off towards the right side of the goal line with the puck, but not before sending a shot up over the shoulder of the goaltender for St. Louis and winning the game for the Vegas Jr. Golden Knights in OT. #88 Liam Butsavich was then mobbed by his teammates as well as goaltender #29 Vinny Vitale as the Vegas Jr. Golden Knights earned their first tournament banner for the season.  Vitale faced 24 shots on goal in the victory while St. Louis’s goaltender faced 21 shots. Vegas battled all weekend and continued to grind even under the unfavorable circumstances of the final Sunday of the tournament. These boys earned that banner against some stiff competition. The win made for a much more pleasant flight/drive home to Vegas for the team and families who traveled to Salt Lake City, UT.

Vegas Jr. Golden Knights outscored their opponents 25 goals for to 9 goals against. The goaltending duo of Parish and Vitale for Vegas a key part of the victory this weekend.   If you would like to follow the Vegas Jr. Golden Knights Bantam AA 14U team, you can request to join their Facebook group “VJGK 14UAA Bantam 2022-2023” and/or subscribe and watch games at Larrison Sports Broadcasting

Flashback Story – Saturday, October 1, 2016

By Lee Samuels

Las Vegas – Whoever knew Weber State had a dark side to its game.

After getting beat twice by UNLV, Weber State turned up its physicality by about one thousand degrees with scorching hard hits, pileups, jumping on a UNLV player near their bench on Saturday night at the SoBe Ice Arena on North Rancho Drive.

It was rough and it was dirty and Weber State got out of town with a 3-2 win, the first team to beat UNLV this season.

UNLV came into the game short-handed. Star goalie Terry Martin had a hand messed up in the series of games last week in Utah. UNLV’s top goal scorer Dion Antisin, a powerful force on the ice, is listed as unavailable – for how long, we don’t really know.

Yet, UNLV again got a top effort from goalie Erik Eidissen from Sweden. Top defenseman Niklas Giers gave his usual 5-Star effort.  UNLV defenseman Steve Terry fired off his precision tape to tape passes. Cody Williams, one of UNLV’s all-time goal scorers, skated hard all night long.

But anyone close to either net got pounded, like real hard.

Before this series began UNLV head coach Anthony Greener said “Weber State is quick, skates real hard and finishes their checks.”

Boy did they ever….

From the Blue Line –  Nicklas Giers scored from the slot area for the first UNLV goal….Then on a power play Jake Saxe, on the right side of the Weber State net, fired off a shot which rebounded onto the stick of Axle Anderton who was in the high slot area on the left side. Axle launched a blue-streak low liner which scorched into the net to ignite the UNLV fans….UNLV is now 6-1-0…ASU is coming into town next week, the first game Friday night at the Las Vegas Ice Center (8:05 pm facebook), then on Sunday at the T-Mobile Arena (12:05 pm faceoff).

Adam Naglich, an ’84, grew up in Las Vegas and skated on the ‘Red Line’ with Josh Jasek and Eddie Samuels on a Rob Pallin-coached 2001-02 Las Vegas Mustangs 18u team which won the Pacific District Regionals and played in the U.S. Nationals. From there, Adam played with the BCHL Victoria Salsa, was a captain with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks, played in the ECHL with the Bakersfield Condors and skated in Hungary with Sapa Fehervar

ADAM NAGLICH

‘MY GREATEST GOAL”

“I would have to say my greatest goal would have to be when I was playing in college with NCAA Alaska Fairbanks.

“I scored against Ohio State in the playoffs. We went on to win the Best of 3 series and got to play in the CCHA Finals at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. It was my senior year and it was the first time that our team made it to the Joe in my time playing in Alaska.

“My linemates at the time were Braden Walls and Ryan Hohl.

“The actual goal wasn’t anything fancy or special. I received a pass right around the top of the left face off circle and put it low glove.

“But it really felt great winning this important series on home ice —  something that meant a lot to me and I will never, ever forget it.

For The Love of Hockey – a Look at UNLV’s Brendan Manning by Bethany Drysdale, Kat Craner and Christina Oka

With the UNLV regular season coming to a close, the playoff picture is coming into focus for the Rebels. One reason for their continued success this season has been a freshman forward from Victor, New York. Not far from Lake Placid, where the 1980 Miracle on ice pushed USA hockey into the spotlight, Victor is a small town just outside of Rochester. A place where hockey and lacrosse are popular sports; Brendan Manning started playing hockey with his older brother. At age 3 or 4, Brendan started ice skating. He credits his love of hockey to his family. His father grew up playing hockey and his mother was a big supporter of both her sons playing on the ice.

This season, as a UNLV forward, Manning has played 28 games, tallying 10 goals and 6 assists. Last season, the 20-year-old Manning spent his time in the EHL, playing 29 games with 12 goals and 13 assists, keeping up a consistent presence on the ice.

His most memorable hockey moment, “I would have to say, probably, playing hockey for one year with my brother. My brother was always one grade ahead of me, and he played high school hockey growing up, but I never did, because my team, when I was playing youth hockey, was always full season for travel, and it wasn’t half a season for travel AND high school, so I never had that chance to play with him until one year, finally, my team was a split team, it was travel AND high school, so I had the ability to play with my brother, which I did, and it was really fun.

“We won our high school championship and everything, and it was a really fun year. I would say that was probably, like, the best memory. But I would say probably that playing for a Canadian league when I was a sophomore was probably one of the most exciting moments of my hockey career because not every kid gets the opportunity to play in a really profound league like that. I was 15 years old, and I was going to Toronto on a Tuesday to have a game at 7:00 at night, and then I would have to drive, 4 hours back home, and I would literally get home at 3 in the morning and have to get up and go to class the next day. It kind of separated me from others, in terms of a normal school life, and, like, a normal teenager’s life, so, I would say that was probably one of the things I will always remember is the dedication I needed to have at 15 years old to play hockey.

We asked Brendan what advice he has for young kids in Las Vegas who are now catching on to hockey now.

“I would say that, if you’re young, I don’t think that you should go 100% into hockey, that you should try other things. Other sports are going to compliment hockey as well. I don’t think a kid should play one sport when he’s young. I think a kid should play more sports because, you know, if you play baseball, if you play soccer, all of those things are going to compliment hockey. If hockey is your favorite thing, that’s fine. But as you get older you can start to fade away from your other sports and take hockey a little more seriously. But you have so much time, and, you know, when you’re that young, it doesn’t really matter. Everybody, you know, hits a growth spurt at a different age, and that’s the best thing you can do is stay active when you are young. It’s just going to make you a better hockey player, in 5 or 10 years.

“I don’t think training and lifting weights at 10 or 12 years old is going to be beneficial when you’re 20. I think that everybody should just be active, be a kid. Don’t take it so seriously. You don’t have to live the life of an NHL kid when you’re 10 years old. There’s no point in that, it’s not going to make you any better. It’s just really demanding, and I don’t think that kids realize that when they’re that young, and the same with parents. It can be a lot, and it just catches up to you so quick. So, just, there’s so much time for hockey, and you’re going to be playing it for so long. When you’re young, those are the things that you’re going to enjoy the most, so just go with your friends and school, just playing baseball, playing soccer… You want to have three sports in the year. That’s the goal, to be active year-round. That will make you a better hockey player.”

As for his Brendan’s long-term plans, “In 5 years, I will hopefully be graduated from UNLV, but I think I’m going to try to play a year or two, or maybe more than that, in Europe. I’m not sure where. I just know that I’ve always kind of wanted to see something different and play in an area I’ve never seen before. I think playing in Europe is always something that I’ve wanted to do because it’s something different.

“I’ve never even been to Europe, so I feel like my first time to go play hockey there would be special. I also know that hockey in Europe is a little bit different of a style of game. There’s nothing for sure yet. I’m just trying to kind of go with the flow, and I’m going to try to enjoy UNLV while I’m here, and then whatever happens, happens after that.”

Manning is an International Business major and thinks the idea of commercial real estate is a possibility for a career outside of hockey.

For now, The Rebels are focused on bringing home a division 1 ACHA title to Las Vegas. Follow Brendan’s team the Rebels as they make their way to Frisco, Texas and fight it out March 19-24 for a National title.

We stayed at number 13 in the ratings but we have to take care of business by winning all 3 of these road games to move up in the rankings. We need to to be really focused and buy into this weekend – we are beat up and hurt, but so is everyone else. We have to go to battle and get onto a win streak before The Nationals get underway.”
